MUSICMAKER’S INTRODUCES LINE OF INSTRUMENT KITS FOR KIDS

STILLWATER, MN. — If your child is begging for a guitar this Christmas but you think it’s not in Santa’s budget, think again.

Your budding musician can make his own instrument from a kit that costs less than the price of a video game – and have it completed in time to play tunes at Christmas dinner.

Musicmaker’s Kits of Stillwater announces its newest product line, Instrument Kits for Kids, which features six musical instruments that children can build on their own.

“We’ve wanted to produce kits for children for years,” says Jerry Brown, owner of the 25-year-old company.  “Kids learn by doing.”  The new products were developed and field-tested with the help of music educators.

The kids’ kit concept is deceptively simple: each instrument is comprised of a stringboard attached to a resonating chamber.  But it took Brown’s team months of experimentation and revision to configure all the components to be inexpensive, simple to assemble, and musically sound.  The resulting kits include all prepared parts necessary to construct an instrument that really works.  Each package even comes with an instructional songbook so that young makers can begin playing as soon as the glue dries.

Step-by-step instructions were designed with teachers and homeschoolers in mind.  “A project like this is inter-disciplinary,” says Brown, a lifelong musician and do-it-yourselfer.  “Building a musical instrument can span the fields of music, art, woodworking, science, math, history, culture, and more.” Musicmaker’s offers a bulk rate to teachers, parents and schools who order kits in quantity. The projects are aimed at children ages 9 and up.

Educators say building a musical instrument engages kids in more than one sensory learning experience. “You can’t beat these kits for appealing to students who have different learning styles -- especially tactile learners,” says Laurel Benedict, music teacher with the Minnesota Public Schools.  “It’s a fantastic process with a great reward at the end.”

Construction takes about 3-4 hours, and the project can be easily divided into separate one-hour segments.  But whether an instrument is built in one sitting or over several days, young makers come away with a wonderful sense of accomplishment.

“When I was done, I was surprised that it sounded just like a real guitar,” said middle-schooler Nathan Schouvieller of Oakdale.

Instrument Kits for Kids are available for rock guitar, folk guitar, banjo, ukulele, mandolin and mountain dulcimer.  Find out more by contacting Musicmaker’s Kits at (651) 439-9120 (local), (800) 432-5487 (toll free) or on the web at www.musikit.com.

TELECOM CONSULTING GROUP TO BUILD CRITICALLY-NEEDED TOWER IN NORTHERN CALVERT

OWINGS, MD. —  Telecom Consulting Group, Inc. (TCG) of Owings, MD announces the construction of a low-visibility monopole cellular tower on Route 261 in northern Calvert County.  The Board of Appeals recently approved the construction plan.  The tower is scheduled for completion in summer 2004.

Radio frequency engineering studies in 2003 confirmed the critical need for a cellular tower along the corridor, where the current absence of analog and digital signals limits telecommunications use.

For consistent reception, towers are typically spaced between 2 and 3.5 miles apart.  The stretch along Route 261 from the town of Chesapeake Beach to Plum Point Road is more than 4 miles long, creating reception difficulties. Peaks and valleys of the local terrain contribute to the problem.

“It happens to me all the time,” said TCG Chief Executive Officer, Mark Fisher, an Owings resident.  “I’ll be driving along Route 261 and my cell phone call breaks up at the bottom of a hill.  I’ve often wondered what a motorist would do along that corridor in an emergency – if he were unable to get a signal to dial 911.  Finally, after thinking about it, I realized that I was in a position to do something about this for our community.”

The designated site is significant in that it will be the first in Calvert County to be built on property enrolled in the Agricultural Land Preservation Program – acreage that is generally restricted to farming and forestry use.  TCG successfully lobbied for the zoning change.  Now, preserved-property landowners can take advantage of long-term lease arrangements (such as the agreement with TCG) to generate additional income from their properties.

The zoning change also reduces the impact of tower construction on the community.  Under the new code, sites can now be placed inconspicuously on preserved properties rather than on main thoroughfares.

The monopole tower to be built at the northern Calvert location is designed to accommodate all existing telecommunications companies and their services — including PCS, cellular, mobile radio, wireless and high-speed data — yet is among the most unobtrusive of all cellular structures.  Its service range will extend 7 miles or more into the Chesapeake Bay to boaters with cellular and broadband devices.

Established in 1995, Telecom Consulting Group, Inc. is one of 100+ private cellular tower companies nationwide, and is one of the largest independent tower owners in the mid-Atlantic.  The company builds, owns and manages towers in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia.

“I’m thrilled that we are able to construct this tower for the residents of Calvert County,” said Fisher.  “This is an extremely important site.”
